Currently paralyzed shooting victim celebrates life of baby she lost
PEORIA (25 News Now) - It’s been one year since a pregnant Peoria woman was shot, later losing her baby.
The mother is currently paralyzed, but relatives hope for a recovery. Meantime, the family wants justice as no arrests have been made.
Dozens of loved ones gathered Tuesday night to celebrate the life of baby Jamiyla.
“They let her take her last breath on her mommy chest,” said Markeisha Jordan, cousin of Breannia Webster.
23-year-old Breannia Webster was six months pregnant when she was shot in the arm and chest on Peoria’s south side. It was one year ago when she had an emergency caesarean section and open heart surgery.
“She didn’t deserve that, she didn’t at all. She was a very sweet girl, very nice person,” said Jordan.
Baby Jamiyla died 23 days later and became Peoria’s 25th homicide of 2021.
“They had the baby on life-support too, she was doing well for a couple of days and then there was just nothing else they could do,” Webster continued, “I was sick to my stomach, I was lost for words.”
But Webster didn’t just lose her daughter. She lost the life she had before. Webster is paralyzed and can no longer speak, but her family says she has made progress. Her family says she was studying to be a nurse and working in the medical field.
“Day-to-day life is we’re catering to Breannia, all her needs,” Jordan said, “I’m not giving up on her. I honestly see hope even if she’s not coming back 100%. We’re going to at least get her 85 (%) or something.”
Peoria Police say they have no recent tips in this investigation and no arrests have been made.
“She was definitely at the wrong place wrong time. That was not meant for her,” said Jordan, “I just pray whoever did it, just turn yourself in, let us breathe.”
For now, Webster is surrounded by her family as they will always remember baby Jamiyla.
