PEORIA (25 News Now) - “I came out here and just started rocking, I watched my house be tore down and everything. It was devastating.”

Peorian resident Chandra Pilkington was one of the many residents who lost their home to a house fire within the past few weeks. She feels the experience was horrific and it should of took her and her spouses life.

A house fire occurred Monday night on Easton Avenue leaving her home and another demolished within hours following the fire.

She was notified by firefighters of a suspected arson at her residence due to a mattress being lit on fire against the back of the home. The fire was controlled by 2 a.m. but took nearly five hours to extinguish.

“I’m sitting here watching my whole life go down the drain. Other then myself, I said you know god was with us because if he wasn’t, we’d be dead, because when we woke up the smoke was already rising and about to go over the bed,” Pilkington said.

Pilkington urges resident who haven’t gone through this to look into a safety plan with your family for emergencies that result in fire.
