Amateur radio operators set to converge on weekend ‘hamfest’ in Peoria
PEORIA (25 News Now) - Electronic hobbyists and amateur radio operators from around the state are set to meet in Peoria for the annual amateur radio “Superfest,” on September 17 & 18, at the Expo Gardens.
The Peoria Area Amateur Radio Club says amateur radio or “ham” operators use radio to communicate around the world, and regularly provide communications services when phones, the internet and other systems fail in the aftermath of tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes or other natural disasters.
Many hams in central Illinois are trained weather spotters, and regularly provide the National Weather Service and local emergency service agencies with timely information on conditions affecting public safety.
Superfest chair Deb Suhs says this has been an annual event for more than 60 years.
“It is a tradition in our community, giving everyone a chance to learn more about this exciting hobby,” she said.
