PEORIA (25 News Now) - Peoria Public Schools and the Peoria Federation of Teachers are in mediation for a third time Thursday evening.

The two sides have been negotiating a new deal since the old contract expired in the Summer. The mood is cautiously optimistic after two previous mediation sessions ended without a deal. However, both sides remain confident a deal can get done.

“We are going into tonight’s meeting with one goal - to exit the meeting with a done deal,” thhe teachers union said on Facebook Thursday afternoon.

Previous bargaining and mediation sessions have gone on past midnight, but the PFT hopes things move quicker tonight. Only one item is reportedly left to settle, but pay has been a sticking point in past bargaining sessions.

Two weeks ago, union members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, but as of now, PFT bargainers have not given the district a 10-day notice to strike.
