PEORIA HEIGHTS (25 News Now) - An annual event is raising awareness of local veterans’ service by bringing them together in one place.

Saturday, the sixth annual ‘Armed Forces Celebration Day was hosted at Pour Brothers bar. The event is a collaboration between the Peoria Heights American Legion, VFW, and Navy Marine Club, ocused on bringing awareness to local vet organizations around the community while raising money for a different veterans charity every year.

For this year’s gathering, money will go to Freedom Paws, a local group that raises, trains, and provides a service dog to those with PTSD at no charge.

“It’s a way for them to get together and visit, talk, tell stories, and maybe tell some stories that they wouldn’t tell anybody else other than to another veteran,” says Scott Corsaut, Commander at the General Wayne A. Downing American Legion Post 1111 in Peoria Heights.

Around a thousand people were expected at the event’s peak, with food, drinks, a silent auction, and live music all on the list of offerings.
