State police investigate apparent suicide at Peoria County Jail
PEORIA (25 News Now) - A Peoria County inmate was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday and died on Monday. It’s under investigation by Illinois State Police as an apparent suicide.
Sheriff Chris Watkins says the man was not on suicide watch. He says jail standards require regular inmates be checked on twice per hour.
The sheriff says the inmate was initially booked on August 9 on multiple charges and a no bond out of county warrant.
“We do in everything in our power to prevent this,” Watkins continued, “The officer did find him, within minutes of attempting that, the detainee. He did leave here with a pulse, it just wasn’t enough.”
That man has not yet been identified.
