PEORIA (25 News Now) - If you saw some firefighters out and about in Pekin this morning, they were not putting out fires but rather making sure kids went to school safely.

For the 18th year, the Pekin Fire Department helped grade school students safely navigate traffic and get to their first day of school.

They were outside of Washington Intermediate School and others schools in District 108, Wednesday morning for their first day back to school.

this intersection has continuous traffic as only two of the blocks have stop signs.

Fire Chief Trent Reeise says he just wants the kids and parents to know that they are here for them, “we want the kids to know they need to be mindful as well. they need to watch out for traffic. we want to keep them pumped up and excited about school. It’s a good opportunity as well to start recruiting for future firefighters.”

The speed limit in school zones is 20 miles per hour.

Chief Reeise says a lot of parents and the school district is appreciative and this event brings everyone together to look out for the best interest for the kids.
