EAST PEORIA (25 News Now) - Smoke shops now have to be farther away from schools in East Peoria following action taken Tuesday night by the city council.

Commissioners passed an ordinance putting new restrictions on smoke shops in an effort to curb teen smoking.

Until now, smoke shops could have been pretty much anywhere in the city. With this new rule, they can not be within 500 feet of any school, child care facility, or other buildings used for educational or recreation programs for people younger than 21.

“This is about youth smoking, in part,” said Commissioner Mark Hill.

“But it’s also about the means for the city, it’s managing the whole customer and visitor experience,” Hill said.

Hill noted the council’s action follows an interest in starting smoke shops in a concentrated area, leading city leaders to find a new way to manage them.
