SPRINGFIELD (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The Illinois Department of Transportation and Gov. JP Pritzker joined together in a press conference to announce a $34.6 billion investment toward transportation on Friday.

That money will go toward improving roads, bridges, transit, rail, airports, and ports in Illinois. It is a part of the Rebuild Illinois plan that was put into place in 2019. The plan will include $6.36 billion toward highway reconstruction and preservation, $6.4 billion for bridge improvements, $2.03 billion for strategic expansion, $2.48 billion for system support such as engineering and land acquisition, and $1.55 billion for safety and system modernizations.

“Together we are literally paving the way for generations to come. At its core Rebuild Illinois and this MYP are an investment in our future,” Pritzker said.

The plan is also meant to create jobs and promote economic growth.
