Massive fire destroys recycling center near St. Louis
MADISON, IL (CNN and 25 News Now) - Thick clouds of smoke could be seen for miles near St. Louis Wednesday as a huge fire destroyed a metal recycling building.
Nearly 200 first responders from St. Louis and several Metro East fire departments were called to the Interco building on Industrial Drive in Madison, Illinois, across the river from St. Louis.
At least one person was injured from the fire, which was so intense that it could be picked up on weather radar.
Reports said workers were inside the building recycling batteries, but there was no confirmation about what caused the massive fire.
The Madison County Emergency Management Agency said on its Facebook page Wednesday evening that the fire was contained, but firefighters were working to put out any remaining hot spots. The agency said shelter-in-place orders remained in effect, although the order had been lifted for residents of nearby Granite City, according to the community’s Facebook page.
The Madison Fire Department responded to several explosions and a wall collapse at the same building in 2020.
