PEORIA (WEEK) - The Better Business Bureau is warning of a new scam targeting contractors.

Scammers are claiming to be out-of-town property owners. They set up a project with contractors and send over payment only to request a refund using nontraditional methods, such as a wire transfer or mobile banking app.

Once the money is sent, the original check will bounce and the money will be taken from the contractor’s business account. The BBB reports that Spanish-speaking companies are targeted at higher rates. To protect yourself, avoid clients that refuse to meet in person or video chat and watch out for fake checks.

“BBB recommends businesses look for some of the hallmarks of fake checks. A few things to consider include:

Does the check number at the top-right corner match the check number at the bottom?

Is the company’s or individual’s name or address misspelled?

Is the check stock flimsy or suspicious?

Does the check have the correct routing number at the bottom for the bank it is supposedly drawn on? Consumers can search for routing numbers for most banking institutions online.”
