25 Sports Thursday: High School Hoops Recruiting and Aaron Miller Memorial Softball Tournament
(25 News Now) - With the summer basketball recruiting winding down, high school players are getting ready to return to their school teams but some are doing so with more to think about in their recruiting process. Metamora senior Ethan Kizer has seven Division I offers including one from Illinois State. He’s intrigued by the Redbirds offer not only because of his like for new ISU head coach Ryan Pedon but also because his friend and AAU teammate Ty Pence committed to the Redbirds last week. He’s still considering his options, but ISU is certainly in the mix.
Peoria native Lathan Sommerville has been back in town coaching at Curley Boo Johnson’s Skills for Life Camp this week. The son of former Bradley star Marcellus Sommerville, Lathan transferred from Peoria Notre Dame to The Skill Factory in Georgia last year. He says he’s seen his game improve a lot at prep school and now also has seven Division I offers heading into just his junior season. He says there’s a chance that he’ll follow in his dad’s footsteps to Bradley and he also likes Rutgers early in his recruiting process.
And it was a terrific night of softball in Kickapoo on Thursday. The 2nd annual Aaron Miller Memorial Softball Tournament kicked off on Thursday to honor the life of former Brimfield student-athlete Aaron Miller who tragically died in a car accident in 2020 at the age of 16. Teams from Brimfield, Farmington, Williamsfield, Stark County, Dunlap and Elmwood are all playing in the tournament whose proceeds go to funding scholarships for area students. The tournament is also a reminder of the legacy that Aaron Miller left behind in his short life.
