Illini hold first practice of fall camp Saturday
CHAMPAIGN (25 News Now) - Saturday marked day one of year two for Illinois head coach Bret Bielema and those low numbers are the numbers to keep in mind for Illinois.
The Illini return No. 0, Josh McCray who had a big impact last year as a freshman. No. 1 Isaiah Williams, a returning wide receiver, could be an All-Big Ten candidate. No. 2 Chase Brown, who’s on the NFL radar as a running back, and No. 3 that’s Tommy DeVito. The transfer from Syracuse could be the Illini starting quarterback.
A lot of excitement with the skill players back. A lot of excitement just to get started today in Champaign.
“Yeah, you know, we’re probably what you’re seeing,” Bielema said. “Even about a half hour out from team meeting I got a message from one of my operations staff that said, this group’s locked in like gameday right. They were just kind of excited, anxious, eager. I think because we were jumping right into practice added that element, but for sure there’s a vibe.
“It’s always exciting. I would say just the idea of year two, knowing our roster a little bit better, Really the first time, not only for you guys to see them, but we literally added guys the last couple days of camp that I’ve never been able to see workout, so. The chance to see the new blood and really the freshmen who weren’t with us in the spring that I’ve kinda seen.”
The Illini open their season four weeks from Saturday when they host Wyoming at Memorial Stadium.
