PEORIA (25 News Now) - For the second straight year, a local organization is raising awareness of cleft lip conditions, and raising money for research and treatment.

‘Cleft Proud Peoria Proud’ was started by six Peoria families that had children born with cleft lip conditions.

Cleft lip is a birth condition where facial features do not fully develop during pregnancy, leading to an opening in the child’s upper lip, or the roof of their mouth.

Saturday, the group invited families to Olympia Sports Bar & Grill to enjoy some food and learn more about the condition’s impact on families.

“A lot of us were faced with this diagnosis, and really didn’t have much education on a cleft diagnosis and what it meant,” group member Lindsay Mentgen said. “This has really given us an opportunity for our children - as well as the community - to spread awareness on something that really is a treatable condition.”

All of the funds raised Saturday go to the Smile Train - a nonprofit that helps fund cleft lip surgeries and treatment for families all over the world.

In 2021, Cleft Proud Peoria Proud raised $25,000, organizers said they hoped to exceed that number in 2022.
