NORMAL (25 News Now) - Illinois State coach Ryan Pedon has stressed he wants Illinois players and wants local players to wear the ISU uniform.

He’s backing up the talk with some serious summer recruiting.

Normal Community big man Jaheem Webber and Bloomington Central Catholic point guard Cole Certa are both emerging as top prospects in the Illinois High School class of 2024. They’ve both seen a big uptick in their recruiting in the summer before their junior years.

“It’s going pretty well,” Webber said. “I’ve heard from a lot of coaches and I’m just really excited about the start of my recruiting process, so, it’s a lot of fun hearing from coaches and playing out here in front of all these guys.”

“I heard from Iowa, Iowa State. Loyola, Illinios State,” said Certa. “Just a lot of texts just from a bunch of schools. Just try to stay humble and just try to keep working.”

The high school juniors heard their phones ring right at midnight on June 15 and a lot of them are hearing phone calls from the new Illinois State head coach Ryan Pedon who’s making recruiting Illinois a real top priority.

“It’s going pretty well, yeah, he’s reached out to me a few times and he’s seen me play a few times, so things are going well,” Webber said.

“I know his big thing is recruiting guys from the area and I have a great relationship with him,” Certa said.

Bloomington’s talented guard Niko Newsome is another junior to be that Illinois State’s keeping a close eye on. The hometown Redbirds don’t have to look far to recruit some of Illinois’ top preps.
