PEORIA (25 News Now) - Peoria Police said they have arrested a suspect for fatally shooting a man last month near Peoria High School, and also seized several firearms as part of the investigation.

Police said their Special Investigations Division arrested Stephen Coaxum, 34, on Wednesday for first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Coaxum is accused of killing Roger Browder, 21, during the noon hour on May 21 in the 1500 block of North Bigelow Street. At the time, many people were celebrating the high school graduation just blocks away.

Browder was pronounced dead at the scene in what was Peoria’s 9th homicide this year.

Tied to Coaxum’s arrest, police said their Special Response Team obtained a search warrant and recovered several firearms in the 2600 block of North Lavalle Court.
