DUNLAP (Heart of Illinois ABC) - The kids are long gone for the Summer.

One Dunlap Middle School teacher is using her grant to make sure students have something advanced to look forward to this Fall.

Mrs. Andrews is a previous One Time at a Time grant winner from late January.

Looking back on the memorable day when we surprised her with a check, she says it was simply exciting.

“When you’re given a gift like that and you know you’re about to give your students something that’s going to blow your mind, it’s really a gift for me too.”

Andrews says programs like hers can be challenging at times, often due to a lack of funds.

“Our programs are usually the first ones to get cut, so any time we can get a gift like a grant, it’s amazing to help build our program and show others how important it is.”

If you know Mrs. Andrews than you know something near and dear to her heart is the stem curriculum.

Using that $1,000 grant, she’s introducing students to next level technology.

“So we ended up getting two 3-D printers and a whole bunch of filament for them, also just other stem supplies.”

Far more advanced than the popsicle sticks she inherited when she first stepped into the classroom.

Adding the students now have the tools in order to help them build and be creative.

“We’re really opening up the possibilities for these students. We’re really helping them with that creative thinking and that problem solving. We’re just giving them more ways to solve problems which is really going to benefit them in the future.”
