PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - “This all started with a vision from our former librarian Mona Wing who wanted to have a great and fun way to access books for kids.”

Mrs. Wing may be living the retired life now, but she’s certainly leaving her mark at Maude A. Sanders.

“Kind of wish I was here to see it on a daily basis but I’m enjoying retirement.”

Well she’s back on this day, seeing her dollars go toward a great cause.

Wing donated the $1,000 grant from Heart of Illinois ABC and CEFCU that we presented to her in January of 2021.

“Started as a thought, and I reached out to many organizations and wrote many grants to try and get funding for this.”

This, being a brand new book vending machine.

“It is beyond exciting, it’s just a fulfilling, feeling to have something for these kids.”

Now with a little incentive, kids have the opportunity to choose their own reading material.

“I really want kids to see books as a rewarding experience. Not something they have to do to take a test, not something they have to read to get a grade.”

Full of emotion and enthusiasm, Wing is now seeing her vision, on display, everyday for all classes, all the time.
