FULTON COUNTY (WEEK) - An all-terrain vehicle crash in Fulton County Sunday night killed a teenage athlete from Canton.

Lukas Goforth, who was 19, played baseball and football at Canton High School and stayed in the community to attend Spoon River College.

Fulton County Coroner Steve Hines told 25 News Goforth was one of six people on a large, side-by-side ATV that crashed between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday near Cypress Road and Stone School Road, about 10 miles east of Canton.

Others riding the ATV suffered minor injuries.

The driver “failed to negotiate a turn,” leading to the crash, Hines said.

Authorities don’t believe alcohol or speed were involved.

Spoon River Snappers baseball team released a statement Monday.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to announce the loss of a current Snapper player. Lukas Goforth tragically lost his life in an accident late last night. Please pray for all of his family, as well as his friends and teammates as we are all heartbroken.”

Goforth was a pitcher completing his freshman season with the Snappers, according to Spoon River College’s website.
