Lexington (Heart of Illinois ABC) - A lot to celebrate on this day at Lexington Elementary School.

Student presentations on display inside the gym, Mrs. Carter front and center, unaware of what’s awaiting her.

“This was such a surprise, and such an honor, I just can’t believe this is happening right now.”

Carter calls her last four years at Lexington Elementary the most amazing during her teaching tenure.

“We have a blended classroom which is ages 3-5, some with special needs. I actually taught first grade for about 13 years and I needed a change. I came to Lexington and joined the preschool class.”

Since then it’s been a steady process of watching her students achieve at their own pace.

“Teaching 3, 4, 5 year old’s is such an honor because you get to see their development and their growth progress in just a few months. I’m blessed to work with these students and blessed to work in this community.”

Carter says she’s done a lot of grant writing in the past in order to provide her students with the tools they need to succeed, adding this $1,000 grant will be a big boost to her classroom.

“So, something I’ve been wanting to do is some learning bins, this is something the kids can take and do the activity and it’s always ready to go. I think making things easier for the kids to get the tools in their hands and be independent is something I would like to start for my first project.”
