PEORIA (25 News) - Driving around the Peoria area today on Interstate 74, you likely saw some IDOT workers picking up trash along the highway.

As warm weather becomes more abundant in Illinois, IDOT transitions from snow readiness to trash pickup and pothole filling. Specifically in regards to trash, just in the Peoria area, IDOT picks up an alarming amount.

“The last couple springs we’ve averaged between 15 and 30 tons of garbage and that is a lot of garbage.” Said Paul Wappel, Public Information Officer for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Littering in the State of Illinois can carry significant fines, and even jail time, depending on the severity.

And the job of picking up trash in the State throughout the year carries a large cost for the taxpayers. According to a 2021 IDOT release, taxpayers paid over $6 million to pick up trash along roadways in Illinois in 2020.

Paul Wappel tells us that the priority of IDOT is keeping the roadways safe.
