Today is Pi Day!
PEORIA (25 News) - Today, Monday, March 14, 2022, is not your typical Monday. Today is lovingly known around the world as Pi Day!
Pi (you know like 3.14159 and so on) is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio between the circumference and diameter of a circle. The number is irrational, infinite, and does not appear in any predictable pattern.
Raeanne Keaschall, the 8th-grade math teacher at Pleasant Valley Intermediate School in Peoria is a self-proclaimed “pi nerd” and her students are celebrating the mathematical constant all week.
“Mostly I think they like it they like the break from the monotonous you know everyday common core. They’re in the middle of state testing right now so it’s really nice to kind of shift gears and do something fun.” Said Keaschall.
The concept of pi is about as old as math itself, the constant appearing in the mathematical workings of ancient Babylonians and Egyptians. They were far ahead of their time but these days, we know a little more about Pi.
“The record at the moment was set last year is approximately 63 trillion digits.” Said Tony Bedenikovic
Tony Bedenikovic is an Associate Professor of Math at Bradley University. He also told us that despite us knowing vastly more places than the ancient mathematicians, they were well aware that the ratio was “about three.”
Pi appears all over your daily life and across the Universe. Essentially, anywhere there is a circle, rotation, or sphere, pi is present. Our team of meteorologists used pi in their studies and will on occasion break it out again if an equation is needed.
So celebrate Pi Day today with either some fun math or a nice slice of pie, the edible kind!
