PEKIN (25 NEWS) - Just two months ago, the delta variant was COVID-19′s dominant strain in Illinois, but that changed very quickly, according to data released Tuesday by Pekin-based Reditus Labs.

All 188 randomly-selected positive specimens from the first four days of December were identified as the delta variant. By mid-December, all but two positive specimens were identified as the omicron variant, according to a Reditus news release.

The most recent analysis of 90 positive specimens collected January 11 and 12 identified 88 as the omicron variant and two as the delta variant.

“The interesting story here is, rapidly, omicron became almost 100% of all positive cases so quickly. The data does show that also is the case in our testing area,” said Reditus Chief Executive Officer Dr. Aaron Rossi in a prepared statement.

Reditus said the average turnaround time for processing test results is about 20 hours for the more than 500,000 tests it has administered during the last 40 days.
