PEORIA (25 News) - The Central Illinois Winter is pretty brutal. the flat terrain allows for some bitterly cold temperatures whipping winds to make the air feel much colder than the measured temperature. And we haven’t even gotten to the snow.

Snow snow snow we get a lot of it every year and there is more on the way this week. That snow and ice, along with salt and other methods of travel mitigation wreak havoc on your automobiles and cause them to literally rot.

Rust is a chemical reaction between bare metal and oxygen. This occurs in your car when bare metal is exposed to moisture. Ice and snow tend to pack into places in your car and they will stay there a lot longer than rain would. This eventually causes rust and there is nothing you can do about it once it starts.

“It looks like just little bubbles, but what in fact it is, is the rust on the back of the metal tries to work its way through to the front of the metal.” Said Bob Pohl, Owner of Maaco Peoria.

You can try to prevent rust by getting an underbody coating done every couple of years, but that is expensive and time-consuming. If you wash your car on a regular basis, that can help in the long run. If you want to prevent rust altogether? Bob says “Move to Arizona, because rust will happen in Central Illinois.”
