PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC) - An advocate for stem education is getting all the right results in the classroom.

Nina Andrews at Dunlap Middle School is clearly respected by her teaching peers and students, one reason she’s this week’s One Class at a Time grant recipient.

There’s no secret, Mrs. Andrews does most of her teaching in the classroom however...

“Taking the kids out of the classroom, taking away from the textbook, putting them into the real world a little bit it’s also just fun.” says Andrews.

That’s also how she describes her stem curriculum at Dunlap Middle School.

“I think stem is really important, because it makes the connection between what the kids are learning here in school and how they are going to use it in real life. How you’re going to use Science, how you’re going to use Math, how you’re going to use technology to solve problems.”

Teaching stem at the grade school and now junior high level, Andrews is pretty popular.

In fact she received the most nominations for One Class at a Time ever, presenting her with a check, clearly a no-brainer.

Andrews says she’s excited to put the grant money to good use toward her classroom.
