PEORIA (25 NEWS) - The holiday message remains the same from the Peoria Fire Department this year, keep the wreath red.

The bulbs on their holiday wreath will turn from red to white for every structure fire this month. The campaign started in 1995 as a way to remind people the safety measures for preventing house fires, especially during a month where a lot of cooking and baking is happening.

However, the fire risks go far beyond the stove.

“Number one is the decorations that we are using in our house and extension cords we might be using with those decorations. Make sure we are using properly rated extension cords. Any lights we are putting up we want to make sure they are in good condition. Turn them off when you are away from home or going to sleep,” said Division Chief of Fire Prevention Nate Rice.

This comes as Peoria sees a spike in house fires, some deadly.
