Local food banks in McLean County hand out turkeys, food boxes to community
NORMAL (25 NEWS) - Local nonprofits in the Twin Cities partnered up Saturday to help families get what they need for a Thanksgiving meal.
Midwest Food Bank, Home Sweet Home Ministries, Thrivent Financial and others helped hand out out 2,500 boxes of food filled with stuffing, rolls and turkey.
CEO of Home Sweet Home Ministries Matt Burgess said between 8,000 to 10,000 people are able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal thanks to the community pitching in to help.
He said coming together to help others in need shows the true meaning of Thanksgiving.
“Big smiles and expressions of gratitude, even when people have masks on, you can see their eyes that they’re just so thankful,” Burgess said.
“Lots of people just saying ‘Thank you, we’re able to celebrate Thanksgiving because of this,’” he added.
Those organizations will host another food distribution on Monday, Nov. 22 at Midwest Food Bank.
Home Sweet Home Ministries will also be delivering hot meals to the community on Thanksgiving day.
